Strukturaaliväritys refers to a phenomenon where structural coloration arises from the microscopic physical structure of a surface rather than from pigments. This type of coloration is observed in nature, particularly in insects, birds, and fish, and is also utilized in artificial applications.

The colors produced by structural coloration are a result of the interference of light waves. When light strikes a surface with specific micro- or nanostructures, such as layered materials or diffraction gratings, certain wavelengths of light are selectively reflected or transmitted, while others are canceled out through destructive interference. This selective reflection or transmission creates the vibrant, often iridescent, colors that are characteristic of structural coloration.
