Strömungsbanden, a German term often translated as "flow bands," refers to a geological phenomenon observed in sedimentary rocks. These bands are characterized by alternating layers of different sedimentary materials, exhibiting varying grain sizes, compositions, or degrees of sorting. They are commonly found in fluvial (river) and lacustrine (lake) environments, as well as in shallow marine settings.

The formation of strömungsbanden is directly related to fluctuations in the energy of the transporting medium, typically water. During periods of higher energy, coarser or denser sediment particles are deposited. Conversely, during lower energy conditions, finer or lighter particles settle out. These cyclical changes in energy, often driven by seasonal variations, flood events, or tidal cycles, lead to the distinct layering observed.

The thickness and composition of individual bands can provide valuable insights into the paleoenvironmental conditions present during deposition. For instance, thick, coarse bands might indicate energetic flood events, while thin, fine-grained bands could represent periods of calm. The study of strömungsbanden is therefore important for reconstructing past depositional environments and understanding the dynamics of sediment transport. They are a visual record of environmental variability preserved within the rock record.
