Stone inlay is a decorative technique in which pieces of cut or ground stone are set into a base material so their surfaces form a continuous, flush plane. Stone inlay is also known as pietra dura in contexts describing hardstone inlay. The resulting motif can be geometric, vegetal, figural, or text-based, depending on craftsmanship.
Materials vary widely. Common stones include marble, serpentine, jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise, malachite, onyx, and obsidian.
