Stimuliets are a broad class of substances that increase activity in the central nervous system. In many contexts the term functions as a stand-in for stimulants. They commonly produce heightened alertness, faster thinking, increased energy, and improved concentration, with effects that vary by substance and dose.

Categories include natural stimulants such as caffeine; prescription stimulants used for ADHD and narcolepsy, including amphetamine derivatives, methylphenidate, and lisdexamfetamine; newer wakefulness promoters like modafinil and armodafinil; and illicit stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine. Nicotine is also a stimulant by some classifications. Availability and regulation differ by country.

Most stimuliets raise synaptic levels of monoamines, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine, though mechanisms differ. Amphetamines promote release of monoamines; methylphenidate blocks reuptake; caffeine antagonizes adenosine receptors. The result is increased arousal, improved attention, and reduced perceived fatigue, but potential for adverse effects.

Short-term effects include wakefulness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, reduced appetite, and insomnia. Side effects can include anxiety, tremor, and digestive upset. With repeated use, tolerance and dependence can develop, and withdrawal may occur if use stops abruptly. Long-term high-dose use is linked to cardiovascular, psychiatric, and cognitive risks.

Regulation varies globally. Medical use is typically permitted under professional supervision when benefits outweigh risks. Many stimuliets are controlled substances to reduce abuse and diversion, while some natural stimulants remain widely used. Public health efforts focus on education, monitoring, and treatment for substance use disorders.
