Stethoskopische, in English often rendered as stethoscopic, denotes the domain of medical practice that relies on the stethoscope and auscultation. It covers the evaluation and interpretation of sounds produced by the heart, lungs, and sometimes other organs during clinical examination. In German-language medical literature, the term describes both the technique of listening with a stethoscope and the findings that result from it.

The term stems from the stethoscope, from Greek stethos “chest” and skopos “to look at,” with the German-form adjective stethoskopisch or the noun-derived usage Stethoskopische. The technique of auscultation was popularized in 1816 by René Laennec, the inventor of the stethoscope, and has since become a fundamental component of physical examination across medical specialties.

During auscultation, the clinician places the stethoscope on the chest walls or abdomen and listens for heart sounds (S1, S2) and any murmurs or additional sounds such as S3 or S4; for the lungs, practitioners assess crackles, wheezes, and rhonchi. Abdominal auscultation may reveal bowel sounds in some contexts. Standard practice includes systematic positioning—anterior and posterior chest for lungs and specific precordial areas for the heart—and comparison between corresponding regions on both sides.

Devices vary from conventional acoustic stethoscopes to electronic models that amplify, filter, record, or transmit sounds for telemedicine and teaching. Electronic stethoscopes can enhance audibility and enable digital analysis, but the core skill remains highly dependent on examiner technique and clinical context. Ongoing research explores digital auscultation and artificial intelligence to aid interpretation while preserving the foundational role of stethoskopische auskultation in clinical care.
