Stemwetenschap is a Dutch-language term that can refer to different concepts depending on the context. In some usages it denotes the scientific study of plant stems within botany, while in others it is used to describe the broader field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as a domain of study and research. The lack of a single, standardized definition means that the term may appear in diverse discussions of biology, education, or policy.

In its botanical sense, stemwetenschap concerns the stem of the plant—the axis that supports leaves and flowers and conducts water and nutrients. Core topics include stem morphology and anatomy, vascular tissue arrangement, growth patterns, and the regulation of development by hormones. Methods commonly employed are microscopy, histology, imaging techniques, genetic analysis, and physiological measurements. Applications range from crop improvement and forestry to understanding how stems adapt to drought, salinity, and mechanical stress.

In the educational or policy sense, stemwetenschap can refer to the integrated study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as an area of curriculum, research, and workforce development. This use emphasizes pedagogy, curriculum design, equity and inclusion, and the connections among the disciplines through project-based learning, data literacy, and innovation.
