Stemclasping refers to a characteristic in botany where the base of a leaf or a part of the leaf, such as the blade or petiole, wraps around or clasps the stem of the plant. This arrangement is also known as perfoliate when the leaf blade completely surrounds the stem, with the two fused edges meeting on the opposite side of the stem. However, stemclasping is a broader term that encompasses instances where the leaf base does not fully encircle the stem but still shows a significant degree of attachment and encirclement.

This morphological feature can serve various ecological functions. For some plants, stemclasping may help to channel water down to the roots, especially in dry environments. It can also provide additional support to the stem, making the plant more rigid and less prone to lodging. In some cases, the clasping leaf base might offer protection to young buds or shoots developing at the stem's axil. The presence and degree of stemclasping are often considered important diagnostic characteristics in plant identification and taxonomy, helping botanists distinguish between different species or genera. Examples of plants exhibiting stemclasping include certain species of *Silphium* and *Lysimachia*.
