A steelball is a small spherical object manufactured from steel, used in a variety of mechanical and industrial applications. The most common material is bearing steel, such as AISI 52100, a high-carbon chromium alloy that provides high hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. Stainless steel variants (for example AISI 304/316 or 440C) offer corrosion resistance in moist or chemically aggressive environments.

Manufacture typically involves melting and alloying the constituent elements, forming rough spheres by casting or forging, and then precision finishing. Grinding and lapping achieve tight roundness and smooth surface finishes, while heat treatment increases hardness. For bearing-grade balls, hardness commonly falls in the high range of Rockwell C 60–66. Tolerances and quality are governed by standards in bearing and precision-sphere production, with stringent checks on roundness, surface defects, and hardness. Ball sizes range from sub-millimeter to several centimeters, with specific tolerances catering to the needs of different machinery.

Primary uses include serving as the rolling elements in ball bearings, where steel balls rotate between inner and outer races to minimize friction and wear. They are also employed as grinding media in ball mills to crush and refine minerals, ceramics, and other materials. In addition, steel balls appear in various specialized applications, such as precision valves, medical devices, and experimental apparatus, where uniform spherical performance is essential.

Steel balls are produced globally and are largely recyclable, contributing to material efficiency and lifecycle management in industrial operations.
