Statusryhmät is a Swedish term that translates to "status groups" in English. It refers to a concept within sociology and social stratification that describes divisions within society based on social honor and prestige. Unlike class, which is primarily based on economic factors, status groups are defined by shared lifestyles, consumption patterns, cultural affiliations, and social evaluations.

The concept was notably developed by German sociologist Max Weber. He argued that stratification in society occurs along three dimensions: class (economic position), status (social honor), and party (political power). Status groups are characterized by a sense of "us" versus "them," often involving social closure, where members of a group try to maintain their exclusivity and prevent outsiders from entering. This can manifest through specific ways of dressing, speaking, behaving, or through membership in certain clubs or organizations.

Examples of status groups could include professional associations, ethnic communities, religious orders, or even groups united by shared tastes in art or music. The prestige associated with a status group can be inherited, acquired through education and achievement, or conferred by societal recognition. While economic status can influence social status, they are not always perfectly aligned. An individual might have high economic class but low social status, or vice versa. Understanding status groups helps to explain social interactions, inequalities, and the dynamics of social mobility within a society.
