A statuemaker is a craftsman or artist who designs and creates statues, sculptural figures, or other three-dimensional works intended to be viewed in the round or used as ornament. The term covers specialists working in a range of materials, including stone, metal, wood, plaster, and modern composites. In some contexts, statuemakers also perform restoration, reproduction, or installation work.

Work typically begins with concept development, sketches, or a small-scale maquette. A full-scale model may be produced in clay or wax. For durable outdoor works, a mold may be made and a final statue cast in bronze or another metal; for stone statues, the form is carved from a block using chisels, mallets, and rasps. Wood statues are carved with gouges and knives. Finishing steps include smoothing, patination, painting, gilding, or wax coatings.

Modern statuemaking often employs a combination of traditional hand tools and contemporary technologies such as 3D modeling, mold-making, and, in some cases, computer-guided carving. Materials and methods vary by project, climate, and intended lifespan of the work.

Historically, statuary has played a central role in public art, religion, and commemoration; many statuemakers worked within workshops or guilds, producing works for churches, tombs, monuments, and civic spaces. In the contemporary art world, the term is often used interchangeably with sculptor or stone carver, though some practitioners emphasize the fabrication and finishing aspects of statue production.
