Stativet (the tripod) is a three‑legged support used to stabilize optical or measuring instruments, most commonly cameras. In Swedish, stativet is the definite form of stativ, and stativets is the possessive “the tripod’s.” Tripods provide a stable base by distributing weight over three contact points and by allowing height adjustment.

Most statives consist of three extendable legs joined at a hub, a central column, and a mounting head. Materials include aluminum and carbon fiber; carbon fiber offers higher stiffness and lower weight at a higher cost. Leg-locking mechanisms vary, including flip-lock, twist-lock, or lever-lock systems. Some models include leg braces or spreaders to improve stability on uneven ground.

Tripods support a range of equipment, from still photography cameras to video cameras, telescopes, and surveying instruments. Heads vary: ball heads for quick framing, pan-tilt heads and fluid heads for precise control, sometimes with a quick-release plate for rapid mounting. The choice depends on desired smoothness of movement, load capacity, and shooting style.

Care and safety: keep joints clean, avoid overtightening, store with legs retracted, and do not exceed load ratings. Tripods are essential for low-vibration long-exposure shots, timelapses, and astronomy, and they remain a standard accessory in photography and surveying.
