Standardizations encompass the formal processes by which organizations develop and implement technical standards—agreed specifications, criteria, methods, or terminology—that enable compatibility, interoperability, safety, quality, and efficiency across products, services, and systems.

Standards development occurs across many domains, including manufacturing, information technology, communications, and governance. Key actors include international bodies such as ISO (International Organization for Standardization), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and ITU; regional or national bodies such as ANSI, BSI, CEN, and DIN; and industry consortia and professional associations.

The standardization process typically involves identifying needs, drafting proposals, forming technical committees, soliciting public input, reaching consensus, voting, and publishing standards. Standards are maintained through revision cycles to reflect new technology and experience. Standards can be de jure (legally adopted or mandated) or de facto (widely adopted by market practice).

Benefits include improved interoperability and safety, clearer specifications for manufacturing and testing, reduced duplication of effort, and broader market access. However, processes can be slow, may raise concerns about IP rights and licensing (such as FRAND terms), and sometimes contribute to fragmentation when multiple bodies publish incompatible standards.

Historically, modern standardization emerged from industrial needs in the 19th and 20th centuries, with formal international bodies established in the mid-20th century. ISO was founded in 1947, later expanding to include IEC; ITU predates many of these as a treaty-based organization. Standards organizations generally operate on a consensus basis, inviting participation from industry, academia, and the public.
