Stagewiring is the electrical cabling and distribution system used in live performance venues to supply power, control signals, and audio-visual equipment on stage. It covers the planning, routing, and connection of cables from utility mains or dimmer racks to lighting fixtures, sound systems, effects devices, and rigging hardware. The goal is to deliver reliable power and data while minimizing trip hazards and interference and to enable safe, efficient setup and teardown.

Key components include power distribution: feeders, stage boxes, dimmer or distro racks, and connectors such as stage pins or locking types. For higher-power or outdoor use, IEC 60309 or NEMA-style connectors may be used. Control and data cables include DMX512 lighting control, XLR or AES/EBU audio cables, and network protocols such as Art-Net or sACN for modern lighting control. Multicore stage cables, or “snakes,” provide groups of circuits for lighting and sound.

Practice emphasizes cable management and safety: color-coded cables, clear labeling, routes planned to avoid foot traffic and heat sources, use of cable ramps, gaffer tape, and cable guards. Redundancy and grounding are essential; equipment should be bonded to the venue’s earth ground. Compliance with electrical codes (for example NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E in the United States) and venue policies is required, and stagewiring work is typically performed by qualified personnel.

Temporary stagewiring must be inspected before use, with continuity checks and protection against tripping, moisture, and damage. While the specifics vary by region and venue, stagewiring remains a foundational element of safe and effective live performance production.
