Stadiametric is an adjective referring to stadiametry, a method or principle based on fixed angular references or stadia marks to measure distance, size, or angular subtension. The term derives from stadia, a historical unit and concept used to relate linear dimensions to viewing distance through trigonometry.

In optics and rangefinding, stadiametric rangefinding uses reticles or scales with known separations to estimate the distance to a target. By observing how much of the target underlies or aligns with the stadia marks, a distance is inferred without electronic rangefinding. This approach is common in rifle scopes, optical telescopes, and some surveying instruments, where rapid, on-the-fly distance estimates are valuable and calibration is essential for accuracy.

In vision science, the term stadiometric is applied to methods that determine visual acuity using optotypes with fixed angular sizes at a standard viewing distance. Reading or resolving letters that subtend a specified angle allows clinicians to express acuity in units tied to angular size, such as decimal acuity or logMAR. This approach emphasizes consistent angular magnitudes rather than fixed physical sizes.

Applications of stadiometric methods rely on careful calibration of target size, distance, and viewing geometry; accuracy can be affected by parallax, alignment, or target orientation. The concept remains a practical toolkit in fields requiring quick, geometry-based distance estimation or standardized angular measurements.
