Språkfunksjonene, or language functions, refer to the various purposes for which language is used. Developed by linguists like Roman Jakobson, this concept categorizes communication into distinct roles based on the focus of the message.

The referential function, also known as the denotative or informative function, is concerned with conveying information about the real world. It is objective and focuses on the context of the communication. The emotive or expressive function, conversely, focuses on the sender's feelings, attitudes, and emotions. It reveals the speaker's state of mind.

The conative function centers on the receiver, aiming to influence their behavior or thoughts. Commands, requests, and advertisements exemplify this function. The phatic function is used to establish, maintain, or break social contact. Greetings, small talk, and farewells fall into this category, serving to manage relationships rather than convey specific information.

The metalingual function, or metalanguage, occurs when language is used to discuss language itself. This includes explaining the meaning of words, defining terms, or discussing grammar. Finally, the poetic function, distinct from mere aesthetics, focuses on the form of the message itself, emphasizing the sounds, rhythm, and structure of language. This is prominent in poetry and literature. These functions often overlap within a single utterance, but one may be more dominant depending on the communicative intent. Understanding these functions helps analyze how and why we communicate the way we do.
