Spränghylsor, often translated as primer pockets or primer wells, are a crucial component of many metallic cartridges used in firearms. They are designed to house the primer, which is the initiating element of the firing sequence. When the firing pin strikes the primer, it ignites a small explosive charge within the primer, which in turn ignites the main propellant charge within the cartridge case.

The design and dimensions of spränghylsor vary depending on the type of primer used, primarily Boxer and Berdan primers. Boxer primers are common in many Western countries and feature a central flash hole. The spränghylsa for a Boxer primer is typically a recess with a single flash hole at its base. Berdan primers, more prevalent in some European countries, have two smaller flash holes. Consequently, their spränghylsor are designed with a central anvil protruding into the pocket.

The manufacturing precision of the spränghylsa is critical for reliable ignition. Too loose, and the primer might not seat correctly or could potentially be ejected during firing, causing damage. Too tight, and seating the primer can be difficult, or the primer itself might be damaged. The depth of the spränghylsa also ensures that the primer is flush with or slightly below the base of the cartridge case, preventing premature ignition when the bolt closes or when cartridges are stacked in a magazine.

In handloading or reloading ammunition, the condition of the spränghylsor is important. Old primers are removed, and new primers are seated into these pockets. The spränghylsa can be reamed or countersunk if the primer is seated too high. The integrity of the spränghylsa contributes to the overall safety and functionality of a fired cartridge.
