Spriteilmiöihin, commonly known as sprites, are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above cumulonimbus clouds. They are also referred to as transient luminous events (TLEs). Sprites are characterized by their brief, often reddish or bluish-purple flashes, which can extend several miles upward into the atmosphere. They are typically observed above thunderstorms, particularly during intense lightning activity.

The exact mechanisms behind sprite formation are still a subject of ongoing research, but it is generally believed that they are triggered by the strong electric fields generated by the underlying lightning strikes. Specifically, a powerful positive cloud-to-ground lightning flash is thought to cause a rapid upward redistribution of charge in the atmosphere, creating a strong electric field above the cloud. This field can then ionize the air at altitudes of 30 to 60 miles, leading to the visible sprite phenomenon.

Sprites come in various shapes and sizes, including columns, carrots, and jellyfish-like structures. They are incredibly fleeting, lasting only a few milliseconds, which makes them challenging to observe and study. While first reported in the 1980s, widespread scientific investigation began in the late 1990s with the advent of more sensitive cameras and observational techniques. Researchers use specialized equipment, often deployed on aircraft or high-altitude balloons, to capture images and data from these elusive atmospheric events. Understanding sprites contributes to our knowledge of atmospheric electricity and the complex interactions between thunderstorms and the upper atmosphere.
