In its internal taxonomy, it is placed in the family Sprendiaceae and is described as endemic to the cloud forests of the Valen Archipelago. The genus is commonly cited as an example of spiral phyllotaxis and plant–pollinator coevolution within its fictional ecosystem.

Plants in the genus are described as rhizomatous perennials with slender stems and opposite lanceolate leaves. Inflorescences are compact and typically blue to violet, composed of small tubular flowers arranged in a spiral pattern. The flowering period is primarily in the spring. Fruits are dry capsules that dehisce to release seeds, which are depicted as light and winged to aid wind dispersal in the lore.
