Spray control refers to the set of methods and technologies used to regulate the creation, delivery, and behavior of spray liquids. It encompasses hardware such as spray nozzles, pumps, pressure regulators, valves, actuators, and spray booms, as well as software and control algorithms that adjust flow, pressure, and spray characteristics in real time. The goal is to achieve a desired spray pattern and droplet size distribution while minimizing waste, drift, and environmental impact.

Key variables include flow rate, application pressure, nozzle type, spray angle, and droplet size. Nozzles can be selected for air-assisted vs airless atomization and for different pattern shapes. Control systems may be open-loop or closed-loop; in closed-loop, sensors measure pressure, flow, or deposition quality and adjust actuators or valve opening. Techniques include pulse-width modulation of valves, proportional regulation, and electrostatic charging to improve deposition.

Common applications include agriculture for pesticide and fertilizer application with variable rate technology; industrial coating and painting to ensure uniform film thickness and reduce overspray; fire suppression systems; humidification and cooling; and disinfection.

Considerations in spray control include drift reduction, safety, reliability, maintenance, energy efficiency, and compliance with environmental and health standards. The field continues to integrate advanced sensors, machine vision, and AI-based optimization to improve performance and sustainability.
