A språkgren, or language branch, is a subdivision within a language family. It represents a group of closely related languages that have diverged from a common ancestral language, known as a proto-language, over a significant period. These languages share a core set of grammatical structures and vocabulary that can be traced back to their common ancestor.

For example, within the Indo-European language family, Germanic, Romance, and Slavic are considered major language branches. The Germanic branch includes languages like English, German, and Dutch. The Romance branch, descended from Latin, includes languages such as Spanish, French, and Italian. The Slavic branch encompasses Russian, Polish, and Czech.

The differentiation into distinct språkgrenar occurs due to various factors, including geographical separation, political changes, and contact with other language groups. Over time, these separating influences lead to the development of unique innovations and the gradual loss of shared features, eventually resulting in distinct languages that, while related, are no longer mutually intelligible. Linguists reconstruct proto-languages and trace the evolution of language branches through comparative linguistics, analyzing similarities and differences in phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon.
