Spotvernis, known in English as spot varnish, is a selective coating technique used to apply a clear protective or decorative varnish to predefined areas of a substrate. The goal is to create visual or tactile contrast between coated and uncoated regions, often enhancing logos, text, or images while preserving the rest of the surface.

The coating can be water-based or solvent- or UV-curable, with UV-curable formulations being common in modern printing for their fast curing and durable finish. Application methods include screen printing, flexography, offset coating, and digital or inline varnish systems. Precision in registration is important to align the varnish with printed elements, and designers usually specify a mask or vector shape to guide the coating.

Finishes and effects vary and can be gloss, satin, matte, or tactile (soft-touch). In addition to clear varnish, tinted spot varnishes are sometimes used to add color accents while maintaining selective coverage. Spot coatings are frequently cured with ultraviolet light to speed production and improve scratch resistance.

Applications span packaging, advertising and marketing materials, magazines and catalogs, trade show graphics, and art prints. They are used to highlight branding, create texture, protect areas prone to wear, or establish a premium look.

Advantages include enhanced visual impact, added protection for specific areas, and reduced total coating consumption compared with full-surface varnishing. Limitations involve higher production costs, the need for precise registration, potential difficulties with recycling or folding, and the risk of misregistration or uneven coverage if not properly managed.
