Spottkörtelstumörer refers to tumors that develop in the salivary glands. These glands are responsible for producing saliva, which aids in digestion and lubrication of the mouth. Spottkörtelstumörer can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Benign tumors are much more common than malignant ones. They typically grow slowly and do not spread to other parts of the body. The most frequent type of benign salivary gland tumor is a pleomorphic adenoma, often found in the parotid gland, the largest of the salivary glands. Other benign types include Warthin's tumor and adenoid cystic carcinoma (though this can also be malignant).

Malignant spottkörtelstumörer, or salivary gland cancers, are less common but can be more aggressive. They may grow more rapidly and have the potential to invade surrounding tissues and spread to lymph nodes or distant organs. The specific type of malignant tumor influences the treatment and prognosis. Examples of malignant salivary gland tumors include mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

Symptoms of spottkörtelstumörer can vary but often include a lump or swelling in the cheek, jaw, or neck area. Other signs might include pain, numbness in the face, difficulty swallowing, or changes in facial expression if the tumor affects nerves.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, imaging tests like ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans, and often a biopsy to determine the nature of the tumor. Treatment depends on whether the tumor is benign or malignant, its size, location, and type. Surgery is a common treatment for both benign and malignant tumors. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy may also be used, particularly for cancerous growths.
