Spolpumpen, also known as a sump pump, is a mechanical device used to remove water that has accumulated in a basement or crawl space. These areas are typically below the groundwater level, making them susceptible to flooding. A spolpumpen is installed in a pit called a sump pit, which is dug at the lowest point of the basement or crawl space. When water collects in the pit, it raises a float mechanism. Once the water reaches a certain level, the float activates the pump, which then discharges the water away from the foundation of the building, usually through a pipe leading to a storm drain or a safe distance from the house.

There are two main types of spolpumpen: submersible and pedestal. Submersible pumps are placed entirely within the sump pit and are generally quieter and more durable. Pedestal pumps have the motor mounted above the pit on a long shaft that extends down to the pump mechanism. While often less expensive, they can be louder and more prone to issues.

The importance of a functioning spolpumpen cannot be overstated in areas prone to heavy rainfall or high water tables. Without one, basements can experience significant water damage, leading to mold growth, structural issues, and damage to stored belongings. Regular maintenance, such as checking the pump and its discharge line, is crucial to ensure its reliability during periods of heavy precipitation.
