spinnidel

Spinnidel is a small, hand-held spindle-like tool used in manual fiber spinning to help manage twist while drawing fibers into yarn. The term is encountered mainly in artisanal or instructional contexts and is not part of standard industrial spinning equipment. A typical spinnidel comprises a slender shaft with a weighted end (whorl) and often a notch, hook, or ring to anchor the fiber. Materials vary and include wood, metal, or resilient composites; designs range from simple, non-adjustable models to compact instruments with markings for twist measurement.

In operation, the user holds the spinnidel in one hand to provide inertia and stability, while drafting fibers with the other hand. The device acts as a twist reservoir: as fiber is drawn, the shank and whorl resist sudden changes in twist, helping to produce an even ply and enabling delicate fibers to be spun with greater control. It is commonly used with short draws, fine fibers, or for creating specific novelty textures.

Historically, spinnidels appear in 20th-century craft manuals and have continued in use among hobbyists and educators as a supplementary tool to traditional drop spindles and spinning wheels. While not universal, they remain a recognized option within the broader practice of hand spinning.
