In practice, a speedpaint usually begins with rough thumbnails and composition planning, followed by blocking in colors, establishing light, and gradually refining shapes. Artists often limit the palette, work with layers, and use quick strokes to capture form rather than pursuing fine detail in early stages. Tools are typically digital tablets and software such as Procreate, Photoshop, Krita, or Clip Studio Paint.

The accompanying video is typically compressed to a few minutes or up to about 15–20 minutes, sometimes with music and optional narration. Viewers watch the progression to learn technique, brushwork, color choices, and problem-solving approaches. Speedpaints function as tutorials, portfolio pieces, and entertainment, and they may be produced as finished-time-lapses or as part of live streams.

Reception is mixed: speedpainting can showcase efficiency and concept, but critics say it may underrepresent planning or polish. Despite criticisms, the format remains popular among hobbyists and professionals as a way to demonstrate workflow and share artistic strategies.
