A spectrometrist is a professional who uses spectroscopy and related techniques to analyze materials and measure their composition, structure, or properties by observing how they interact with electromagnetic radiation or other probes. Spectrometrists work in laboratories across science and engineering, including chemistry, environmental science, materials science, forensics, healthcare, and astronomy. They typically operate and maintain spectrometers and related instrumentation, calibrate instruments, and ensure data quality through rigorous documentation and quality control.

Common instruments and methods include UV-visible spectroscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Spectrometrists may specialize in one modality or work across multiple platforms to identify substances, quantify concentrations, or determine molecular structures.

Typical responsibilities involve planning experiments, preparing samples, selecting appropriate instrument settings, acquiring spectra, and performing data processing such as baseline correction, peak analysis, and calibration. They interpret spectral data, compare results to standards, report findings to clients or researchers, and maintain instrument logs, calibration records, and method documentation. They may also participate in method development, instrument validation, and safety compliance.

Education usually includes a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field. On-the-job training covers specific instrument platforms and software. Advanced roles may require a master’s degree or PhD and can involve supervision, project management, or development of new analytical methods.
