Soyad is the Turkish term for a person’s family name or surname. It identifies an individual within a family lineage and is typically inherited across generations. In everyday Turkish, one might be asked for their soyadı, as in “Soyadınız nedir?” and the surname generally appears after the given name in official and informal contexts.

Etymology and meaning: The word is formed from the root soy, meaning lineage or ancestry, combined with ad (name). Together they denote the fixed family name used to designate a person’s lineage within a society.

History: Before the 20th century, Turkish naming practices varied and did not require fixed hereditary surnames; many people used given names with patronymics or nisbas. The Surname Law of 1934 mandated that all citizens adopt fixed hereditary surnames, capping a long period of diverse naming practices. This reform established a standardized system for identification in civil records, education, taxation, and official documents.

Usage and conventions: Today, the soyadı is used as the primary family identifier in Turkish records and communication.
