Sovitteluun is the illative form of sovittelu, a Finnish term meaning mediation, settlement, or reconciliation. In legal, social, and organizational contexts, sovitteluun refers to a process in which a neutral third party—the mediator—helps two or more parties reach a voluntary agreement that resolves a dispute without a binding decision imposed by a court or arbitrator. The aim is to improve communication, uncover underlying interests, and produce a durable resolution.

A mediator facilitates rather than decides, maintaining neutrality and confidentiality. Sessions can be joint, with all parties present, or private, with the mediator meeting each party separately. Through structured discussion, parties identify interests, generate options, and negotiate terms. The outcome is typically a settlement agreement drafted by the parties, sometimes with the mediator’s help. If the agreement is signed, it can be legally binding; otherwise it remains a non-binding arrangement or a framework for further negotiation.
