Sorvadás is a Hungarian term that translates to "atrophy" or "wasting" in English. It refers to the decrease in size or wasting away of a body tissue or organ. This can occur due to a variety of reasons, including disuse, malnutrition, aging, disease, or nerve damage. When a muscle or organ atrophies, its cells shrink, leading to a reduction in mass and function.

Muscle atrophy, for example, is often seen in individuals who are immobilized for extended periods, such as bedridden patients or those with casts. The lack of physical activity means the muscles are not being stimulated, and the body begins to break them down for energy. Similarly, aging is a natural process that can lead to sarcopenia, a form of muscle atrophy common in older adults.

Pathological atrophy can be caused by serious medical conditions. Diseases like cancer can lead to cachexia, a severe wasting syndrome characterized by muscle loss and weakness. Neurological disorders, such as stroke or spinal cord injury, can result in atrophy of the muscles that are no longer receiving nerve signals.

The symptoms of sorvadás depend on the affected area. For muscles, it may manifest as weakness, decreased strength, and visible thinning of the limbs. Organ atrophy can lead to impaired function of that specific organ. Treatment and management focus on addressing the underlying cause and, where possible, stimulating regrowth or function through physical therapy, nutritional support, or medical interventions.
