Solkräm, also known as sunscreen, is a lotion, spray, gel, or other topical product that absorbs and reflects some of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and thus helps protect the skin from sunburn and other damage. It is typically applied to the skin before sun exposure. Sunscreens work by either absorbing UV radiation and converting it into heat, or by reflecting UV radiation away from the skin.

The effectiveness of a sunscreen is measured by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF). SPF indicates how much longer it takes for skin to redden with sunscreen compared to without it. For example, an SPF of 30 means it would take 30 times longer for skin to burn compared to unprotected skin. It is important to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for adequate protection.

Sunscreens are categorized into two main types: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, while physical sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, create a barrier on the skin that reflects UV rays. Common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, and octisalate. Physical sunscreens typically contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Regular application of sunscreen is crucial, especially during prolonged periods of sun exposure. It should be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Sunscreen is an essential part of sun safety, helping to prevent premature aging of the skin, sunburn, and reducing the risk of skin cancer.
