Snowplows are vehicles and equipment used to remove snow from roads, runways, and other surfaces to maintain passable routes during winter weather. They are commonly mounted on trucks, large tractors, or purpose-built vehicles and operate in municipal, industrial, and airport settings. The primary function is to push snow off the travel surface or to clear a path, sometimes forming snowbanks along the sides of the roadway.

A snowplow typically consists of a moldboard-equipped blade, a mounting frame, and a control system. Modern plows are usually hydraulically operated to adjust the blade’s height, angle, and sometimes tilting or pitching. Common configurations include straight blades, curved or serrated blades, V-plows, and wing plows that extend plowing width. Many plows are designed as trip plows, which detach or yield on impact to absorb force and protect the vehicle and blade. The blade directs snow to the road shoulder or to the side, depending on traffic and drainage.

Operations and practices vary by setting. Municipal fleets deploy plows in coordinated passes, often using de-icing agents such as salt or sand to improve traction. Airport snow removal uses larger, specialized plows and sweepers to keep runways and taxiways clear. Safety considerations include limited visibility, slippery surfaces, and the risk of striking objects or pedestrians. Operators receive training, and plows are equipped with lights and signaling devices to alert other road users.

Maintenance is essential, covering blade wear, hydraulic systems, and ballast or weight distribution. Environmental concerns focus on salt use and runoff, prompting ongoing research into alternative de-icers and more efficient snow-removal methods.
