Småtarmbakteriel refers to the presence of an excessive number of bacteria in the small intestine. Normally, the small intestine has a relatively low bacterial population compared to the large intestine. When bacteria proliferate in the small intestine, it can lead to various digestive symptoms. This condition is often referred to as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO.

The overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine can result from several factors. These include conditions that slow down the movement of food and bacteria through the small intestine, such as gastroparesis or intestinal motility disorders. Anatomical abnormalities in the small intestine, like strictures or fistulas, can also create environments where bacteria can accumulate. Certain medical conditions, such as celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease, can also predispose individuals to SIBO. Furthermore, the use of certain medications, like proton pump inhibitors or opioids, has been associated with an increased risk.

Symptoms of smårtarmbakteriel can vary but commonly include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sometimes constipation. These symptoms arise because the excess bacteria can ferment undigested carbohydrates, producing gases like hydrogen and methane. This fermentation process can also interfere with the absorption of nutrients, potentially leading to deficiencies. Diagnosis typically involves a breath test, where the patient ingests a sugar solution, and the levels of hydrogen and methane gas produced by bacteria in the small intestine are measured. Treatment usually involves antibiotics to reduce the bacterial population, followed by addressing the underlying cause to prevent recurrence. Dietary modifications may also be recommended.
