Smoothleaf is a small evergreen shrub valued for its smooth, glossy foliage and compact growth habit. Mature plants typically reach 0.3 to 1 meter in height and width. Leaves are simple, opposite, and oval to oblong, 2 to 6 centimeters long, with a glabrous, waxy surface. Margins are entire, and the leaf bases often clasp the stem. Flowers are small and inconspicuous, usually white to pale pink, arranged in dense clusters during late spring to early summer. The fruit is a small capsule containing seeds.

Smoothleaf is native to temperate woodlands along coastal regions and has since become widely cultivated in similar climates. It prefers well-drained soils and performs best with regular moisture in hotter areas, though it exhibits drought tolerance once established. It tolerates partial shade but often requires some sun to develop its best leaf color. The plant has a shallow root system, making it suitable for borders and container culture, and it can tolerate urban conditions with adequate drainage.

In cultivation, varieties with variegated or distinctly colored foliage are commonly selected. Propagation is typically by semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer or by layering, and clumps can be divided in spring. Pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact form and promotes denser foliage.

Smoothleaf is used primarily as an ornamental plant in borders, rock gardens, and low hedges. It provides year-round texture and contributes to garden structure in temperate landscapes. Common pests include aphids and scale; it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions and to root rot in poorly drained soils.
