A smartnøkkel, often translated as "smart key" or "intelligent key," is a modern automotive access and ignition system that allows the driver to keep the key fob in their pocket or bag. It typically uses short-range radio technology to communicate with the vehicle. When the driver approaches the car, the system recognizes the unique signal from the smartnøkkel and unlocks the doors. Similarly, once inside, the vehicle can detect the presence of the smartnøkkel and allow the engine to be started, usually by pressing a button.

The functionality extends beyond simple unlocking and starting. Many smartnøkkel systems can also be programmed to recognize different users and automatically adjust settings such as seat position, climate control, and radio presets. Some systems also incorporate remote start capabilities, allowing the engine to be turned on before the driver enters the vehicle. Security is a key aspect, with encryption and rolling codes used to prevent unauthorized access. However, concerns have been raised about the potential for relay attacks, where thieves can amplify the signal from a smartnøkkel to trick the car into thinking it is nearby.
