Sleep-disordered is a descriptive term for conditions that disrupt the normal pattern, quality, or amount of sleep. It covers a range of sleep-related problems rather than a single disease. It is not a formal diagnosis but an umbrella term used in clinical and research contexts to describe sleep dysfunction.

Common categories include insomnia disorders (difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep), sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, hypersomnolence disorders (excessive daytime sleepiness), circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders (misalignment of the internal clock), and parasomnias (somnambulism, night terrors). Restless legs syndrome can contribute to sleep-disordered sleep when symptoms disrupt rest.

Symptoms vary by condition and often include daytime sleepiness, impaired concentration, memory problems, mood changes, and fatigue. Nocturnal symptoms may include snoring, gasping, restless sleep, or unusual behaviors; untreated sleep-disordered conditions can affect safety and quality of life.

Diagnosis relies on clinical history, sleep diaries, and questionnaires, followed by specialized tests. Polysomnography (overnight sleep study) and actigraphy are common tools; additional testing may include the multiple sleep latency test. Evaluation also looks for contributing medical, psychiatric, or environmental factors.

Treatment is tailored to the disorder and may involve behavioral therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and sleep hygiene; device-based therapy for sleep apnea (CPAP/BiPAP) or oral appliances; medications for select conditions; and treating underlying conditions (e.g., iron for restless legs).

Prognosis varies; many sleep-disordered conditions are chronic but manageable with appropriate therapy. Early identification and treatment reduce daytime impairment and health risks.
