Slacktivism, also known as low-effort activism or armchair activism, refers to actions performed online in support of a political or social cause that are considered to require very little time or involvement. These actions often include signing online petitions, sharing social media posts, changing profile pictures, or using hashtags to raise awareness. The term is often used critically, suggesting that these actions are a substitute for more meaningful or impactful forms of engagement.

Proponents of slacktivism argue that it can be a valuable tool for raising awareness and mobilizing support for causes, especially among younger generations. They contend that even small online actions can contribute to a larger movement by spreading information, creating a sense of community, and encouraging dialogue. Online visibility can also pressure individuals, organizations, and governments to address certain issues.

Critics, however, view slacktivism as superficial and largely ineffective. They argue that it provides a false sense of participation without demanding real commitment or sacrifice. According to this perspective, slacktivism can dilute the impact of genuine activism by creating an illusion of widespread support that doesn't translate into tangible change. It may also discourage individuals from engaging in more demanding forms of activism that require time, effort, and potential personal risk. The debate centers on whether these low-barrier online activities are a beneficial entry point to activism or a superficial substitute for it.
