A slaapbank, Dutch for "sleeping couch," is a piece of furniture that serves as both a seating option and a bed. It is designed for compact living spaces, guest rooms, or vacation homes where a separate bed is not available. The term is commonly used in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Most slaapbanken use one of two core mechanisms. In uitklapbare (pull-out) models, the sofa frame slides out to reveal a mattress that lies flat. In klik-klak or vouwbed variants, the backrest or seat folds down or unfolds to form a sleeping surface. Some models use a thinner built-in mattress, while others employ a full-sized, more substantial mattress.

Materials and sizes vary widely. Frames are typically wooden or metal, upholstery fabrics range from durable synthetics to natural textiles, and mattresses can be foam, memory foam, latex, or innerspring. Common sleeping surfaces vary from narrow single to wider double widths, with thicknesses from a few centimeters to several inches; higher-end models aim for comfort closer to a regular bed.

Pros include space efficiency, flexibility for guests, and the ability to avoid a dedicated guest room. Cons can include a less comfortable sleep surface compared to a standard bed, potential wear of the mechanism, and higher price relative to ordinary sofas.

When selecting a slaapbank, consider the ease of conversion, mattress quality and thickness, seat height, fabric durability, and warranty. Regular cleaning and occasional mattress replacement extend lifespan.
