Skredspunkt is a term used in geotechnical engineering and snow science in Norwegian to denote the critical point at which a slope or snowpack becomes unstable and a slide is initiated. The concept is used to describe the threshold of failure for both landslides and snow avalanches, depending on context.

In slope stability analysis, the skredspunkt corresponds to the condition where the driving forces (gravity, additional loads from rainfall or seismic shaking) equal the resisting forces (friction, cohesion, and shear strength). At this point, the factor of safety is approximately one; if conditions worsen, the factor decreases and failure occurs.

In snow science, the skredspunkt refers to the weak point in the snowpack where a layer boundary fails and a release initiates an avalanche. Weak layers, buried crusts, or faceted crystals can constitute skredpunkter under sufficient loading, such as new snowfall, wind deposition, or warming temperatures.

Assessment and monitoring combine field observations, material property estimates, and numerical or empirical models to identify potential skredpunkter across a slope or terrain. Instruments such as inclinometers, pore-pressure sensors, and snowpack tests, along with meteorological data, help forecast when a skredspunkt might be reached.

The term is primarily used in Norwegian-language contexts and in hazard management to inform land-use planning, avalanche forecasts, and emergency response. In English-language literature, the concept is described with similar terms such as critical slope, failure threshold, or factor-of-safety equal to one.
