Skorbuuti is the Finnish word for scurvy, a disease caused by a severe deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen, a protein that provides structure to skin, blood vessels, cartilage, and bones. It also acts as an antioxidant. Without sufficient vitamin C, the body's ability to produce collagen is impaired, leading to a range of symptoms.
