Skiveudtæthed refers to a condition where there is a loss of structural integrity or a gap within the intervertebral disc, a cushion-like structure found between the vertebrae of the spine. This can occur due to degeneration, injury, or other factors that compromise the disc's normal shape and function.

The intervertebral disc is composed of a tough outer ring called the annulus fibrosus and a gel-like inner core known as the nucleus pulposus. Skiveudtæthed can involve the thinning of the annulus fibrosus, the protrusion or extrusion of the nucleus pulposus through tears in the annulus, or a general flattening or reduction in the disc's height.

Symptoms associated with skiveudtæthed can vary widely depending on the severity and location of the disc involvement. These may include localized back or neck pain, radiating pain into the arms or legs (sciatica or radiculopathy), numbness, tingling, or weakness in the extremities. In some cases, individuals may experience no symptoms at all.
