Skip to content is a web accessibility feature that provides a direct way for keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repetitive page elements such as headers, navigation menus, and banners and jump straight to the main content. It helps users reach the substantive content with fewer keystrokes and less cognitive effort.

Typically, a skip link appears near the top of the page as a hidden anchor that points to a main content region, often identified by an element with an accessible name such as main or content. The link is visually hidden in normal view but becomes visible when it receives focus, usually via the keyboard, allowing activation with a single press.

Implementation considerations include placing the skip link as the first interactive element in the document, ensuring the target region is clearly identified, and providing a concise, descriptive text such as "Skip to main content." Some sites offer additional skip links to major sections like navigation or search when those regions appear at the top.

Accessibility and standards: Skip to content aligns with the bypass blocks guideline of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). It should work with keyboard navigation, avoid moving content unexpectedly, and be compatible with screen readers. Developers should test with various assistive technologies and devices.

Limitations and best practices: On complex sites, multiple skip links may be helpful. They should not conflict with other focus management patterns, nor rely solely on JavaScript for visibility. When implemented well, skip to content is a small but important aid for inclusive web design.
