Skip

Skip is a term with several uses in English. As a verb, skip denotes jumping lightly from one foot to another or moving over something without taking it. It can also mean to omit or pass over something, as in skipping a question or a step in a procedure.

As a noun, skip refers to a large, open-topped container used for disposing of waste, particularly on construction sites. In British English, hiring a skip is a common service; in the United States, the equivalent container is often called a dumpster.

As a name, Skip is used as a nickname or given name, frequently derived from Skipper. Notable people include the American sportswriter Skip Bayless, and the Delta blues guitarist and singer Skip James.

In computing and media, skip is used to describe bypassing a section of data or instructions, or skipping to the next item, such as skipping tracks on a media player or skipping a line when reading a file. The term also appears in user interfaces as a control to move past optional content or tasks.
