Skidbackar is the Swedish term for ski slopes or ski runs — inclines on which alpine skiing, snowboarding and related downhill activities take place. They range from small, gently sloping hills used for beginner instruction to steep, groomed pistes and off-piste terrain suited to advanced skiers. The word combines skid (ski) and backar, the plural of backe (slope or hill).

Characteristics of skidbackar depend on natural topography and engineered modifications. Common infrastructure includes chairlifts, T-bars and gondolas for access; piste preparation using grooming machines; snowmaking systems to extend season length; and signage indicating difficulty levels and hazards. Many ski areas also incorporate terrain parks with jumps and rails, as well as slalom and giant slalom courses for competition.

Safety and management are central to slope operation. Runs are classified by difficulty using color and symbol systems (varying by country) and are maintained to reduce collision risk, control avalanches in backcountry-adjacent areas, and provide rescue services. Patrols enforce rules on speed, signage and closure of hazardous sections. Ski slope design considers fall zones, sightlines and accessibility for emergency response.

Skidbackar are important for winter tourism and local economies but raise environmental concerns including vegetation disturbance, water use for snowmaking, and soil erosion. Sustainable practices — such as limiting expansion, protecting watershed areas, optimizing snowmaking efficiency and rehabilitating vegetation — are increasingly integrated into ski area planning and operations.
