Skemmast is a city-state and cultural hub on the northern coast of the Skeld Archipelago in the fictional realm of Northeria. It sits along several natural harbors and basalt headlands, functioning as a major center for maritime trade, governance, and learning. The city’s population is approximately 36,000.

The name Skemmast is attested in medieval chronicles. Etymologists propose several origins: some link it to Old Northeric elements meaning shelter and mast, reflecting its role as a safe harbor for ships; others suggest a derivation from a local word meaning to seal or caulk, in reference to ship maintenance. The exact origin remains uncertain.

The city was founded as a trading outpost in the early second millennium and grew into a city-state through maritime leagues. In modern times, Skemmast retains a semi-autonomous status within the Northeria Confederation, governed by a council of guildmasters and ship captains; a governor is elected by these guilds for a four-year term.

Its economy centers on fishing, salt production, shipbuilding, and merchant trade. Skemmast is noted for its basalt architecture, ropeworks, and carved timberwork. Cultural life emphasizes storytelling, music, and maritime festivals, with the Night of Lanterns being the principal annual event.

Among its institutions are the Chronicle House, the Seafarers’ Library, and the Harbor Museum. The city’s port remains a crossroads for regional caravans and sea routes, sustaining a diverse urban culture shaped by the sea.
