Skalaarikunta is an Indian cultural and social institution traditionally found among certain South Indian communities, particularly in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The term'skalaarikunta' is derived from the Sanskrit words'sakaara' meaning skill or expertise and 'kunta' meaning group or assembly.

At its core, the skalaarikunta represents an extrajudicial arbitration system and neighborhood court system that resolves local disputes and presides over communal functions. It is a self-regulatory body, comprising respected members of the community who use their social standing to mediate and resolve local issues. Decisions taken by the skalaarikunta are often binding, and its rulings are considered authoritative within the community.

The role of the skalaarikunta can be broadly categorized into three distinct areas. Firstly, it deals with social conflicts that may arise within the community, such as marriage disputes or land disputes. Secondly, it acts as a pressure group, albeit a covert one, advocating for the needs and interests of the community in their interactions with external authorities. Thirdly, the skalaarikunta undertakes key community functions such as fund-raising, trade fairs, and homeland security.

The functioning of the skalaarikunta is not regulated by laws, nor is its decision-making process formalized. Important decisions are taken by consensus after discussions among its members. Skalaarikuntas also often take charge of protecting community interests as well as resolving matters of dispute among neighboring villages.

While it may not offer a consistent check against abuse of authority, the skalaarikunta ensures the rehabilitation of guilt and vengeance to these urges, suppressing it before normal justice seeks redress.
