Sinuksenpoisto, known in English as sinus lift or sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed by dentists and oral surgeons to increase the amount of bone in the posterior (back) part of the maxilla (upper jaw), specifically in the area above the molar and premolar teeth. This area of the jaw naturally has a hollow space called the maxillary sinus, which is located just beneath the tooth roots.

The primary reason for performing a sinus lift is when there is insufficient bone height and width in the upper jaw to adequately support dental implants. If a patient has lost teeth in the back of their upper jaw, the bone in that region can resorb over time, leading to a reduced bone volume that is not suitable for implant placement. A sinus lift procedure creates more bone in this area, providing a stable foundation for dental implants.

There are two main types of sinus lift procedures: the open-window technique and the closed-window technique. The open-window technique involves creating a small opening in the side wall of the maxillary sinus to access the sinus membrane. The membrane is then carefully lifted, and bone grafting material is placed into the space created beneath it. The closed-window technique, also known as a crestal approach, is used when there is already a moderate amount of bone present. In this method, the bone graft material is introduced through the socket preparation for the implant, lifting the sinus membrane from below.

The bone grafting material used can be autogenous bone (taken from another part of the patient's body), allografts (bone from a human donor), xenografts (bone from an animal, typically bovine), or alloplasts (synthetic bone substitutes). After the procedure, a healing period is required, typically several months, for the grafted bone to integrate and become part of the patient's jawbone. Once sufficient bone regeneration has occurred, dental implants can be placed.
