Sinusitis is a common medical condition characterized by inflammation of the sinuses, which are air-filled cavities located within the bones of the skull. These sinuses are lined with mucous membranes, and when they become inflamed, the normal drainage pathways can become blocked, leading to a buildup of mucus. This inflammation can be caused by a variety of factors, including viral infections, bacterial infections, fungal infections, allergies, or structural abnormalities within the nasal passages.

Symptoms of sinusitis can vary in severity and duration. Common signs include nasal congestion, a runny nose (often with thick, discolored mucus), facial pain or pressure, reduced sense of smell, and sometimes a headache or fever. The pain and pressure are typically felt in the forehead, cheeks, or around the eyes. Acute sinusitis usually lasts for a short period, often resolving on its own or with treatment. Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, is defined by symptoms that persist for 12 weeks or longer, despite treatment.

Diagnosis of sinusitis is usually based on a patient's reported symptoms and a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs may be used to visualize the sinuses and identify any blockages or underlying issues. Treatment approaches depend on the cause and severity of the sinusitis. For viral sinusitis, which is the most common type, supportive care such as nasal saline rinses, decongestants, and pain relievers may be recommended. Bacterial sinusitis may require antibiotics. Allergy-related sinusitis might involve antihistamines or corticosteroid nasal sprays. In cases of chronic or recurrent sinusitis, surgical intervention to improve sinus drainage might be considered.
