Sinkkimalmi (zinc ore) refers to minerals from which zinc can be economically extracted. The dominant zinc ore mineral is sphalerite, a zinc sulfide (ZnS). Zinc carbonate minerals such as smithsonite and calamine have historically supplied zinc, while zinc oxide minerals occur as minor ore and alteration products. Most zinc ore forms in hydrothermal veins and replacement deposits and is commonly found with lead ores such as galena and with iron sulfides.

Occurrence and deposits: Zinc ore is mined in many countries; major producers include China, Australia, Peru, Canada, and the United States. Sphalerite often contains iron and can vary in color. Ore grades are typically modest and require concentration by froth flotation; zinc concentrates may contain roughly 50–60% Zn and byproducts such as lead and silver.

Processing and use: After mining, ore is crushed, milled, and processed by flotation to produce a zinc concentrate. The concentrate is roasted to convert sulfide to oxide and then reduced to blister zinc in a furnace. Purified zinc is obtained by electrolytic refining. Zinc metal is essential for galvanizing steel and for alloys such as brass; it remains a major industrial commodity.

Environmental and historical notes: Zinc mining and smelting can have environmental impacts, including sulfur dioxide emissions and tailings management. Historically, calamine and other carbonate minerals were used as sources of zinc before modern flotation methods became widespread.
