These racks are typically constructed from metal, often steel, and are designed to be a stable and secure housing for electronic equipment. They feature vertical rails or posts with pre-drilled holes or keyhole slots, allowing for the mounting of various equipment types using standardized mounting hardware. The width of a standard rack is 19 inches, measured from edge to edge of the mounting rails. The height is measured in rack units (U), where 1U is equal to 1.75 inches. A singlerack can vary in height, with common sizes ranging from 24U to 48U.

The primary purpose of a singlerack is to consolidate and organize IT hardware. This organization facilitates efficient cable management, improves airflow for cooling, and enhances physical security by enclosing the equipment. Data centers and server rooms utilize multiple singleracks, often arranged in rows, to house their complete IT infrastructure.
