Singlefiber is a term used to describe a single optical fiber, the basic element of modern fiber-optic communication and sensing systems. A single fiber comprises a transparent core surrounded by a cladding with a lower refractive index, all encased in a protective jacket. Light is guided along the core by total internal reflection at the core–cladding boundary, enabling signals to travel with low loss over long distances.

Two primary categories are single-mode and multimode fibers. Single-mode fibers have a small core that supports a single light path, reducing modal dispersion and permitting high bandwidth over long links. Multimode fibers have larger cores that support many propagation paths and are used for shorter distances and lower-cost transceivers.

Manufacture and performance: most single fibers are drawn from high-purity silica preforms or polymerized polymers. Key specifications include attenuation, numerical aperture, dispersion, and maximum operating wavelength. Modern silica single-mode fibers offer very low attenuation in the near-infrared, commonly around 0.15 to 0.2 dB per kilometer at wavelengths near 1550 nm.

Applications: single fibers are used in long-haul communications, metropolitan networks, data centers, sensing systems, and medical imaging. They are joined using fusion splicing or mechanical connectors and may be deployed in cables containing a single fiber or in bundles with protective sheathing.

Advantages and challenges: the primary advantages are high bandwidth, long reach, and compatibility with wavelength-division multiplexing. Challenges include precise installation requirements, bending losses, fiber handling, and connector losses that can affect overall link performance.
